Timeless items prove collection's foundation

WHEN Harvey Nichols introduced its own brand collection last season in London and Hongkong, a murmur of approval could be heard across the globe.

At last, here was an affordable, well thought-out collection for the woman whose lifestyle demanded an elegant, practical versatile wardrobe.

For summer, the Harvey Nichols Collection continues to evolve under the watchful eye of buying director Ms Amanda Verdan, and her team.

Timeless items emerge as the foundation for the new season. They include cropped double-breasted jackets, with clever turn-back cuffs in crisp white or classic navy pique, plus the essential long skirt, gently ruched or wrapped in wool crepe and subtlysexy when split to the thigh.

Trousers are simple, unfussy and chic in gabardine and cotton poplin, while fine cotton shirts for day contrast dog-tooth checks with plain white cuffs. Whimsy continues to play its part with Noel Coward-inspired prints offset by jewel-coloured silk evening shirts.

The season's key shapes for knitwear are expertly defined with the tank-top skinny rib and a softer, gently styled tunic - all in knitted silk.

Dress styles vary. Chambray is easy, flowing and long - best worn with a luggage leather belt.

The shift continues and jersey makes a welcome return in a sophisticated full-length long sleeve sheath.

The hot items for a cool summer include a clever, sexy-boned bustier in white or navy pique and a double breasted sleeveless jacket shaped like an oversized waistcoat.

The Harvey Nichols collection redefines cool and breezy elegance and recalls the grace of Deauville in the 1930s with a modern, contemporary mood.
