Deception claim at university

A FORMER department head at the Chinese University of Hongkong appeared before Sha Tin Court yesterday charged with obtaining a total of $14,400 from a teaching assistant by deception.

Chan Wai-leung, 52, former chairman of the Department of Mathematics, pleaded not guilty to three counts of obtaining property by deception between February and April last year.

It is alleged he obtained separate sums by falsely representing that the money would be given to a postgraduate student from China who would share half the workload of Ms Pang Lan-fong at the university.

Magistrate Mr Timothy Jenkins ordered the case to be adjourned until May 7 for a pre-trial review.

Bail of $100,000 was extended on Chan's own recognisance.
