Women and land

MS LAU Lai-fun, the daughter of Heung Yee Kuk chief Mr Lau Wong-fat, supported barring women from land ownership in the New Territories because it was an ''ancient Chinese custom'' (Sunday Morning Post, April 11).

Ms Lau is entitled to her own opinion, but what would she do if her father were to give her some or all of his land? Would she say, ''no I cannot accept the land because I am a woman''? Some Kuk members even used the Basic Law as a reason for not changing the land ownership law. Strangely, a law that is blatantly discriminatory to women maybe a violation of China's constitution! Perhaps Mr Lau could stand for election based on his stance of no land ownership rights for women in the New Territories. I wonder how many women or men would vote for Mr Lau? KELLY NG Repulse Bay
