'Psycho' makes comeback

The Hitchcock classic Psycho is back to haunt film-goers. The original black-and-white thriller made a huge impression on audiences 40 years ago, with many women thinking twice before taking a shower.

The story is centred around Bates Motel, where a killer lurks.

Marion Crane (Anne Heche), a young woman who is desperate to change her life, steals her employers' money.

She packs her bags and leaves town in a hurry, determined to make a fresh start.

As night falls, she seeks refuge in a desolate motel. But she is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The remake, directed by Gus Van Sant, is showing at Ocean, New York, GV Mong Kok, AMC Festival Walk and Broadway cinemas.

Although the film was completed five years ago, Takashi Ishii's Gonin could be a reflection of present-day Japan.

It is a tale of five Tokyo outcasts, set against a backdrop in which the country's bubble economy has collapsed.

Gonin , which means 'five', are all either in debt or in a similar rut and simply fed up with life. They meet by chance at an indoor baseball centre where they take out their frustrations on a pitching machine and sometimes against each other.

The film is showing exclusively at Broadway Cinematheque.

Witchcraft is usually given silly treatment in Hollywood, but Practical Magic delivers a more subtle message. It focuses on women in the Owens family, a clan of hereditary witches who have always been social outcasts because people fear their powers.

Sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) get into love trouble and have to resort to their magical powers to save themselves.

The film, which takes a humorous look at the emotional aspects of being different, is showing at Majestic, New York, Golden Lee, GV Hollywood and GV Mong Kok.
