Wage-cut legislators should show us the money

Those members who voted to reduce the wages of the poorest paid sector of this community must be extremely proud of themselves. The world must be agog at their altruistic action.

Now let us see every person who voted for this 'relatively small reduction', starting with the Secretary for Education and Manpower, and seconded only by Jennifer Chow Kit-bing, put their money where their mouths are and voluntarily give up the same percentage of their salaries. Or perhaps in Ms Chow's case by the percentage she was initially advocating for the maids' wage reduction - up to 20 per cent ('Maids to lose $190 a month from salary', South China Morning Post, February 3).

If anyone is seriously telling me that a saving of $190 a month can only be achieved by cutting the wage of the domestic helper then I would say that they have a real problem with the true concept of 'housekeeping'.

What I am amazed at is the speed with which this has been passed. If only the Government would react as quickly to the less important issues in life - like the pollution problem! ROSEMARY GRIFFITHS Repulse Bay
