The Trade Development Council (TDC) has launched an Internet portal to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) explore business opportunities in cyberspace.

 Tdctrade.com began operations yesterday and replaces the TDC's previous site, tdc.org.hk.

 It will provide manufacturers, traders and their global partners with a medium to obtain market information, find trading counterparts and use e-commerce facilities.

 The TDC hopes to see the portal develop into Asia's leading marketplace for business-to-business trade transactions.

 TDC chairman Victor Fung Kwok-king said the council would heavily promote the toll-free site worldwide, especially in the mainland, enabling SMEs to raise their Internet profile.

 'The site will be especially useful for SMEs with China's impending entry to the World Trade Organisation,' Mr Fung said.

 'All enterprises must have a dominant position in cyberspace apart from the physical world if they are to succeed,' he said.

 The portal site has a database of more than 600,000 buyers and sellers in Hong Kong and worldwide, and is said to be the largest of its kind in Asia.

 Visitors to the site, which has been developed in both English and Chinese, will have access to 100,000 Hong Kong companies in the databank.

 The site has an information centre on China trade and an SME centre that provides news about financing, e-commerce and the Mandatory Provident Fund.

 Mr Fung said the portal was expected to become more popular than tdc.org.hk, which had a monthly hit rate of more than 10 million.
