Torture was for fun, girl testifies

A 15-year-old girl described in court yesterday how she helped torture a woman out of curiosity and for fun.

The accomplice-turned-prosecution witness also said the woman, Fan Man-yee, 23, dared not resist whatever befell her for fear of 'an even more severe beating'.

The court heard Fan, whose exact cause of death in April last year is still a mystery, was kept prisoner in a Granville Road flat for weeks while she was tortured. Her body was dismembered and the remains were cooked and dumped, while her skull was stuffed into a Hello Kitty doll. Police recovered the skull and a tooth in the flat. Her internal organs were found dumped in a plastic bag on May 26 last year.

The teenager took the witness stand in the Court of First Instance to testify against Leung Wai-lun, 20, her lover at the time, and Chan Man-lok, 34, and Leung Shing-cho, 27. The men, all unemployed, have denied murdering Fan but admitted preventing her lawful burial. Leung Shing-cho further denies false imprisonment; his co-accused have pleaded guilty to the charge.

Testifying in return for immunity from prosecution, the girl, who was 13 at the time, recalled that her boyfriend and Leung Shing-cho returned with Fan one day in March last year. The married woman, who had a young son, allegedly owed Chan $20,000, the girl said.

On a subsequent day, the teenager and her boyfriend were alone with Fan in the flat when he allegedly kicked her about 50 times. 'What did you do,' prosecutor Michael Arthur asked her, 'beside watching?'

'I also hit her. With my hand. On her body. Three to four times,' she replied.

On another day, the lovers and Leung Shing-cho melted plastic drinking straws so that the substance dripped on to Fan's feet, the court heard.

The girl said she took part out of curiosity and admitted pouring chilli sauce on Fan's wounded foot. 'I had a feeling it was for fun.' She will continue her testimony this morning before Mr Justice Peter Nguyen.
