1959: The (New) St Paul's Convent School, now under construction in Happy Valley, would hold 600 girl students when it was completed the following September. The 84,000-square-foot building would house 15 classrooms and 10 special rooms and laboratories.

1962: Several local jade merchants became millionaires overnight when a 40-kg crude jade stone they bought at a low price was found to contain flawless jade. The stone was worth more than $3 million after it was cut.

1964: One man was killed and 59 people injured when a tram car leapt the rails in Queen's Road East, Wan Chai, rammed another tram and overturned.

1972: A spokesman for the Commerce and Industry Department said the Government had no direct evidence that 'fake' watches were being manufactured in Hong Kong in large quantities. The department's comments were prompted by a statement from the Swiss Watch Industry that described the colony as the centre of a multi-million dollar 'fake watch' operation.
