Kachyo

Open for just four months, this comfortable little restaurant and sushi bar should prove a big hit with Happy Valley locals. With contemporary twists on traditional Japanese minimalism, Kachyo, which seats just 24 at tables or at the bar, has a relaxed feel. The refreshingly friendly service also makes for a memorable evening - although the food alone would be enough to do that.

Complimentary fresh boiled soybeans and an appetiser of Chinese watermelon in egg began what was to be a highly enjoyable and - following the cultural norm - simple meal.

Then came the sweet shrimp sushi ($65), two juicy pieces accompanied by home-pickled ginger. Together with the equally fresh California rolls ($55), six flying fish roe-coated bite-sized pieces, it all bode very well.

When the yakimono (grilled) eel ($130) arrived we knew we'd found a little gem. Basted in a mirin and soy-based sauce, it melted in the mouth. The yakimono mushrooms ($45 for two skewers) were also full of flavour. Again simplicity was the key factor - plain mushrooms with a touch of herb salt.

The sweet potato tempura ($80) was similarly sheer perfection, with a spot-on light batter and warm dipping sauce.

When we ordered, we thought it wouldn't be enough, but we were proved wrong and were pleased with a bill that came to $501.
