TWO more children with liver disease in the Prince of Wales Hospital may require urgent transplants.

  Six weeks ago the hospital performed a ground-breaking transplant in which Lam Kwok-cheung donated part of his liver to save his three-year-old daughter, Ching-yi.

  Paediatric surgeon Dr Yeung Chung-kwong said the hospital had several children suffering from liver disease and the condition of two was worsening.

  ''Another two girls may need an urgent transplant,'' said Dr Yeung, a member of the transplant team which operated on Ching-yi.

  The hospital had not yet raised the question of a repeat of the Lam operation - the first in Asia involving a live donor related to the patient.

       Head of surgery Professor Arthur Li Kwok-cheung hailed that operation as offering hope to children who until now had to go abroad for treatment.

  Meanwhile, Ching-yi is recovering well from the marathon 16-hour surgery.
