Science Park essential to SAR's success

In his Monitor column of May 29, Jake van der Kamp draws a comparison between the innovative power of Philips and the Science Park. Fortunately the innovations, coupled with stylish European design, and with a major contribution of the 35,000 Philips employees in Greater China (of which 4,000 are in Hong Kong) has brought Philips the results it wants.

On the Science Park I see developments from a different perspective. It is not a matter whether Hong Kong is able to catch up with the front runners in technology, but every advanced society should have within its boundaries centres for hi-tech and advanced sciences. Over time, much will depend on whether Hong Kong can attract the mainland talent.

We certainly consider the Science Park a worthwhile investment, given its proximity to the Chinese University and the mainland border. I trust that the Science Park will be successful within a reasonable timeframe.
