Two men died in separate suicides yesterday while two young lovers survived a suicide pact after burning charcoal in their bedroom.

A 55-year-old businessman was found floating in Victoria Harbour off Western at 1am, about an hour after he called his son and told him he was going to jump into the sea to commit suicide. He reportedly explained to his 25-year-old son that his business had run into serious financial problems.

He lost consciousness while being plucked out of the water by Marine Police and was declared dead at Queen Mary Hospital.

In another case, a mentally retarded man died after being hit by a Central-bound train at Wan Chai MTR station at about 8am. It is thought he was on the way to a sheltered workshop in Wan Chai.

Police said he jumped on to the track when the train arrived at the station. He was declared dead at Tang Shiu Kin Hospital. Officers classed the case as suicide.

Morning rush-hour MTR services on the Island Line were disrupted for about 15 minutes.

In the third case, a 17-year-old girl was critically ill and her jobless boyfriend was in a stable condition in Tuen Mun Hospital after they burned charcoal in their Tuen Mun home.

Their intended suicide pact was discovered when the father of the 18-year-old man went to visit him in the Marina Garden apartment in Wu Chui Road at about 1.30am.

The 47-year-old man called police and a locksmith after no one answered the door. The girl had lost consciousness and the man was still conscious in one of the bedrooms. There was a pot of burning charcoal nearby. Two suicide notes were found.
