YOU WOULD have thought that Alice Mak Ka-bik, the creator of Hong Kong's favourite cartoon piglets McMug and McDull, knew all about this particular farm animal.

Not so. Ironically, it was her lack of contact with pigs that prompted the illustrator to start drawing them.

'Many people have cats or dogs for pets, so it seemed more interesting to feature piglets [in my comic strips],' said Mak, who lives in Causeway Bay.

She certainly has made the right decision. Her creations - McDull, his mother Mrs Mc, his cousin McMug and the forgetful teacher Miss Chan - have a huge following now, especially with the movie My Life As McDull being a runaway box-office success last Christmas.

However, commercial success has never topped Mak's list of priorities. The Polytechnic University graduate told Young Post: 'I hope that every McMug and McDull product can radiate a message of love.'

Mak created the piglets 10 years ago. While she is responsible for the drawings, Brian Tse Lap-man, her business partner and husband, takes care of the storylines.

'It would be a disaster if we were to switch roles. He is weak at drawing, and I am only capable of telling silly stories for children aged three and under!' quipped Mak.

The husband-wife partnership is indeed an excellent one - although the couple's success has totally caught them by surprise.

Mak said she never had very high career aspirations.

Even today, she still insists that her ultimate goal is not to have a successful career, but rather to help others: 'I'm not ambitious. I just want to provide a comfortable working environment for my colleagues, and hope that my friends can become happier.'

Mak is also known for her self-deprecating sense of humour, and she often tells people that she is simple in every sense of the word.

'McDull and I are both stupid. I'm always getting cheated by hawkers and end up paying too much,' she said.

And stupid she certainly isn't. Despite the fact that Mak draws a lot of inspiration from everyday life, her mother is not anything like the often genteel but sometimes fierce Mrs Mc.

'Mrs Mc is not very good at raising children, but my mother is the exact opposite,' Mak explained. 'Although I disagree with Mrs Mc's way of doing things, I nevertheless admire her unceasing love for her son, albeit rather blind love.'

Mak said she felt Mrs Mc spoiled McDull too much, but, as all her fans know, she herself could not resist spoiling him either, giving him a luxurious house as well as a gang of loving animal friends.

It is evident that Mak loves her creations and lives the lives she creates.

Looking back now, the illustrator said it was hard to see herself doing anything else.

'Even if I had to find a proper job, like taxi-driving, and draw in my leisure time, I would still draw.'
