Have you ever been to a rave party? Probably not. In the current series of Songbirds drama episodes, a group of college students who are studying journalism are asked to write an assignment on rave parties in Hong Kong.

In the extract below, Dr Lo, the journalism tutor, is telling his students about the project. Usually when a tutor sets an assignment students have lots of questions, and this is the case with Dr Lo's students, as you will see below.

Bax: What's our next topic Dr Lo?

Dr Lo: Rave parties have become very popular in Hong Kong but unfortunately the young people who go to them may take drugs. A lot has already been written about this phenomenon, but nothing through the eyes of a teenager. What I want you to do is to write about it from a teenager's point of view.

Ted: Does that mean we have to go to a rave party, Sir?

Dr Lo: No, I don't want you to go to a rave party, Ted. I want you to explore rave parties and drug use through interviews.

Alysha: You mean interviewing young people who have been to these rave parties, Sir?

Dr Lo: Precisely, Alysha.

Daisy: But why get second-hand information when we can go there ourselves?

Dr Lo: I'm sorry Daisy but I don't want you - any of you - to go to a rave party.

Daisy: Why not? We could look around. It would give us loads of great stuff to write about.

Dr Lo: No Daisy. Interviews only.

Bax: So where are we going to meet kids who do go to rave parties and take drugs?

Dr Lo: I've arranged with a social worker who specialises in working with young people to introduce some teenagers to you who are prepared to talk about their experiences with rave parties.

Alysia: And drugs, Sir?

Dr Lo: Possibly Alysha. But that will depend on how you get on. If you can win their trust, maybe they will talk to you about taking drugs.

Notice that Daisy would rather go to a rave party than interview people about them. But Dr Lo has to be responsible, he cannot send his students to a place where there may be widespread use of recreational drugs.
