Police crackdown long overdue

As a group of traders operating small businesses in Mirador Mansions, we are concerned about the rising tide of crime in this shopping arcade.

Criminals are operating during the night in the arcade with impunity. In the morning when we arrive at our shops we sometimes find that our property has been damaged (for example, glue being poured into locks). There have also been burglaries and people have been attacked late at night in lifts. We have complained to the management office and to the police, but the criminals are still at large and free to do whatever damage they want during the night.

We completely agree with your correspondent Clement T. Browne (South China Morning Post, October 28) who complained about crime in Chungking Mansions which is next to our arcade. A police post should be established in in one of the buildings or in both of them. This would enable officers to keep a lookout for undesirable elements and throw such people out of Mirador Mansions.

I hope the police will act swiftly so we can carry on with our businesses and live in peace.
