Hash House Harriers give foundation a run for its money

Driving rain and plunging winter temperatures did not stop about 180 Hash House Harriers from donning their running shoes at the weekend to raise more than $30,000 for Operation Santa Claus.

It is the 10th year Hong Kong Hash House Harrier clubs have supported the event organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK.

The runners, from eight clubs, made a one-hour muddy trip up and down Braemar Hill, with 40 dressed in Santa suits.

Each participant donated at least $80, which, together with cheques from clubs, will go to this year's beneficiary, the Pathways Foundation, which helps children with specific learning disabilities.

HK SAR Brewing company, based in Aberdeen, provided beer for the clubs, which enjoy the reputation of being 'running clubs with a drinking problem'.

As the refreshments went down, the Hashers, whose occupations include lawyers, civil engineers, bankers and housewives, sang songs and celebrated.

Thank you to Vikas Khan, president & CEO of Norasia, Jamshed Safdar, head of marketing of Norasia, and their staff for their yacht party on Friday night and their $10,000 donation.

Donations can be made by contacting the Operation Santa Claus office on 2251 1550 or sending a cheque payable to Operation Santa Claus 2002, Bank of China Tower, Level 25, 1 Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong.
