Kim Eng Holdings (Hong Kong) has confirmed that long-time managing director Terry Fok Kwong-hang left the company this week to pursue his own financial business venture.

Michael Chum was being promoted internally to take over Mr Fok's duties, Kim Eng executive Yanny Cheung said.

Mr Fok's departure after more than 13 years of building Singaporean Kim Eng's operations in Hong Kong was 'due to his own personal reasons. He will start up his own business and leave our group', Ms Cheung said.

Mr Chum's 'appointment is quite natural', given he had already been in charge of one of Kim Eng's subsidiaries, she said.

Both Mr Chum and Mr Fok failed to return calls seeking further comment.

Kim Eng has more than 100 staff in Hong Kong with stock trading, futures market and corporate finance operations.

Mr Chum will face a baptism of fire in guiding Kim Eng through the deregulation of brokerage commissions in Hong Kong's markets starting in April.

The move is set to crank up competition further in a market which has too many brokerages chasing too little business.

Other middle-tier names such as SG Securities and Indosuez WI Carr have already pulled out of the research broking business in Asia excluding Japan though Kim Eng is likely to have a lower cost base.
