The Landmark may need nothing more to consolidate its status, but when it comes to dining, the Central shopping heaven is often overlooked for Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo. Fortunately, it has Kiku.

The spacious Japanese restaurant, formerly known as Benkay, has for years been a culinary pearl in The Landmark's basement and was given a facelift in November. It is still under the Maxim's Group but a fusion touch has been injected into the menu and the new design has replaced traditional Japanese style with Western minimalism.

The walk to the private room we had reserved was a cool experience along a catwalk with stone pillars. But we were slightly disappointed to find the room was a little basic compared to the stylish open area, which was divided into several sections marked by different decor. Despite the soothing piano music from the amplifier, the room didn't feel private because the adjacent space, which could be merged with ours to cater for a bigger party, was occupied and we could overhear the diners' conversations.

Choosing from the menu was no easy task as there were more than 100 traditional or fusion items on offer. Of the 12 items we sampled, most were above average, if not divine. The friendly and knowledgeable staff could be counted on to advise on the menu.

There were a number of dinner sets but we went a la carte, entitling us to a 30 per cent discount if we settled the bill by American Express. We started off with geoduck clam ($80), a rarity in most Japanese eateries. The four pieces left me craving for more of the seafood with its freshness and crispy texture, although one of my guests thought it was bland.

We were dazzled by the cold udon with pan-fried chicken steak ($100), a popular dish recommended by the waitress. The noodles were incredibly silky and worked magic with the sesame sauce, which managed to make up for the only defect of the dish - the chicken, which was tasteless and chewy.

The three of us had at least one dish that had us raving. Mine was the simmered clams with sake ($80). The meaty and succulent clams were well-flavoured with Japanese rice wine, and swam in a scrumptious soup that I savoured to the last drop.

One of my guests was impressed by the Kobe beef sashimi ($300) because of its extreme tenderness and sweetness. My other companion's favourite was the prime fatty tuna ($340), which had a fresh, deep flavour. However, we failed to see how the price could justify four pieces of raw fish.

As the portion of most dishes were on the small side, we went for the dessert. Both the green tea cake ($38) and the mango pudding ($38) took us full circle with their pleasant airiness. I'll definitely go back . . . but next time with a fatter wallet. Dinner for three, with two honey lemon drinks and a bottle of sake, came to $1,486.
