Here is the e-mail address of somebody responsible for deluging the globe with spam (mass-mailed virtual junk mail): porkyschmuck@lowlife.foo. Flame away.

Actually, don't bother because, as those of you whose brains run at gigahertz speed will  have realised, the address is fake and there's not much point responding to any spam that lands in your inbox. Even if you find a working address  in the message, your reply would be doing the  spammer a favour because he or she would then know for sure your account was live and would then inundate your inbox with garbage.

Instead, like a sexual desperado who pursues anything with a pulse, the spammer has trawled the internet for e-mail addresses using a virtual device neatly known as a 'spambot'. A software program that browses websites looking for e-mail addresses, a spambot 'harvests' and collects the information into lists. They are then either directly exploited for marketing purposes, or sold - often in the form of CD-Roms crammed with millions of addresses.

An example of the phenomenon is the US$179 Atomic Harvester: a piece of software that combs the internet around the clock, gathering addresses it encounters on bulletin boards and directories.

Pitched shamelessly as 'the most powerful e-mail collection software on the Net', it will supposedly hoover up thousands of e-mail addresses an hour.

Amusingly, if you want to download the demo, you must enter your e-mail address: 'Be sure to use your real one,' you are told, which sounds about as wise as asking a convicted child molester to babysit for you.

Can the spambots be beaten?

Software developer and veteran spambot basher Neil Gunton, who runs a website offering tips on how to combat the irritants (www.neilgunton.com /spambot_trap), claims they can.

His solution is simple: remove the reason they have for hauling their vile porky carcasses all over the internet - e-mail addresses.

'If there weren't plentiful supplies of e-mail addresses out there just ripe for the plucking, then there would be no reason for spambots,' Mr Gunton said. He added that, because most webmasters failed to address the issue, the underlying problem would not be resolved soon.

Mr Gunton suggests two alternative strategies. The first is to replace explicit e-mail addresses with 'contact forms' - pages consisting of text boxes the user fills before clicking on Send. This enables individuals to get in touch easily, without revealing their actual addresses. The rub is that the structure of the forms can feel rather draconian. They are, however, only used to make contact the first time - after that, communication can take place via the usual e-mail clients. So they make sense, he argues.

The second alternative, which is more technical, can be expressed in three words: set a trap. The trap hinges on a cunning and complex programming double act performed by two different scripts (lists of commands that can be executed without user interaction).

While the first blocks forbidden spambots that would cull any e-mail addresses inscribed on a webpage, the second constantly runs in the background, checking every few seconds for additions to the blacklist.

Technopedia suggests an even more rewarding method: track down the perpetrators and publicly humiliate them. This may sound like a revenge fantasy. But witness what pranksters claim to have done to scamsters operating the   419 fraud named after the relevant section of Nigeria's criminal code.

The anonymous good folk responsible for the Scam Joke Page (www.geocities. com/scamjokepage) apparently lead the perpetrators on and then prompt them to pose holding a sign inscribed with the name of the strutting 1980s big-hair rocker David Lee Roth.

How tempting to do the same to the swine responsible for unleashing spambots on the internet.
