Charges against two women accused of killing their terminally ill father were withdrawn yesterday after the Department of Justice decided there was not enough evidence. Their father had been in hospital on a life-support system at the time he died.

Yip Mei-ling,  41, and Yip Fung-mui,  57, had appeared in Eastern Court on March 26 but entered no plea.

They were arrested on February 28, one day after their father, Yip Yung,  84, was found dead at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice confirmed yesterday's developments. After a careful review, officials concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute, she said.

A nurse  found Mr Yip unconscious on his bed, with the tube to his throat disconnected. When efforts to revive him failed, the hospital, which deemed it suspicious, reported the case to police.

It was believed the daughters were not at the scene when their father died.

A postmortem examination revealed Yip had died of a lack of oxygen but without a struggle.
