Three events that could save Bush's skin

There are only three events that, should they occur within the next couple of months, could turn things around for George W. Bush.

The first, but least likely of these, would be a sudden and powerful surge in the US economy, giving a clear indication that many more jobs were on the way. Thus far, however, there's been no indication that this will happen any time soon.

The second event which would catapult Mr Bush back into the White House for a second term would be if Osama bin Laden were suddenly pulled out of some spider hole in Pakistan - dirty, dishevelled and dejected - to be taken in clunky leg irons for arraignment in some dusty Manhattan courthouse. The Democrats even have a codename for such an event, calling it 'the October surprise', complete with plans on how they might try to counteract its effect on the campaign.

The third event that could change the election's outcome would be if a second major terrorist attack takes place on US soil. Such an assault, if it were large-scale, would lead to the traditional 'rallying around the flag' effect, whereby millions of Americans, mistaking a short, frenzied outburst of emotion for patriotism, would immediately support whoever lives in the White House at that time.
