Finally, a widow has answers for her husband's death

For more than a year, Fenny Tsang Chun-sim has had to live without knowing who was to blame for her husband's death at the Baptist Hospital.

She was finally able to get some answers recently after reading the hospital's report into last year's Sars outbreak.

The independent commission ruled that doctors had denied Ms Tsang and her husband the 'right to be informed' when they said the hospital had no suspected Sars cases.

'I'm happy because at least I now know the real reason and the real situation at the hospital at the time,' Ms Tsang said.

She had made it a point to call the hospital before admitting her husband, Cheung Tak-sing, for some stitches in the head. They were willing to pay more money to be in a private hospital to be away from Sars patients.

Even though the couple stayed in the hospital for only one day, both caught the disease. Mr Cheung, a 45-year-old chef, died one month after contracting the disease. Ms Tsang, 42, recovered but has since been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

The commission accepted Ms Tsang's complaint that doctors needed to be held responsible.
