'Despite' means 'in spite of'.  Referring to the first example above, it means even though the future is uncertain, Hegaz and his compatriots are still hopeful that their efforts will succeed.

'Despite' is used to introduce an idea that appears to contradict your main statement.

Remember: 'despite' is always followed by:

a noun (Example: A lot of families are still struggling despite deflation.)

a noun phrase (Example: Despite the higher prices, I still prefer organic food.) or

a noun clause (Example: He's not arrogant at all despite the fact that he's a prince.)
