Berlin is Germany only to the extent to which New York is the United States. The parallels between the two cities are inescapable. They share an alluring decadence, an affection for the arts, a bunker mentality, a gentle disdain for most outsiders and the employment of a sharp, impatient, almost insolent sub-dialect.
