Walkathon raises thousands for young leaders, pet charity

More than 100 people and their animals took part in the Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL) Walkathon on July 17.

They raised $15,500 for the union and the Society for Abandoned Animals (SAA).

The annual fund-raising event held on the Peak was organised solely by the student-based, not-for-profit HKUYL, which aims at inspiring and training young people to demonstrate leadership potential.

Participants walked along Lugard and Harlech Roads.

Some pet owners and guests from the SAA brought along their dogs and cats.

By giving participants the chance to come into direct contact with the animals, the HKUYL hoped to arouse people's enthusiasm for caring for living things.

Of the total amount of money raised on the day, one-third will go to the SAA, while the rest will be spent on the union's day-to-day operation.

The SAA is a charity that fights for the rights and welfare of animals.

It offers shelters for homeless animals and runs an adoption service.
