Hong Kong Museum of History

General information

The Hong Kong Museum of History collects, preserves, studies and displays cultural objects which are related to Hong Kong and the South China area.

Besides its main museum at Chatham Road South, it has three branches: the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence at Shau Kei Wan, the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum (Shamshuipo) and the Law Uk Folk Museum (Chai Wan).

The main museum's permanent exhibition, The Hong Kong Story, which occupies eight galleries, is divided into natural history, archaeology, ethnography and local history. The museum also runs Sailing west: Admiral Zheng He's Voyages at the special exhibition gallery. Its resource centre provides reference books, periodicals and audio-visual materials on Chinese and Hong Kong history, archaeology, ethnography, natural history and museum studies.

Opening hours

10am-6pm on Monday and Wednesday to Saturday;

10am-7pm on Sunday and public holidays.

Closes at 5pm on Christmas Eve and Lunar New Year's Eve.

Closed on Tuesday (except public holidays) and on the first two days of the Lunar New Year.

Special programmes

The museum offers lectures at weekends, while video programmes and workshops related to exhibitions are held in the activity room.
