JVC still good at video

While they can both take still and video images, there are major differences between digital cameras and digital camcorders. Typically, each device does what it has been designed to do well, and only offers limited performance in the other category.

As such, camcorders don't usually take good stills and vice versa.

JVC's Everio GZ-MG505 aims to rectify this. It combines a full-feature camcorder by one of the world's leading makers with 3-CCD/5 mega-pixel performance. Instead of a single image sensor, the MG-505 leverages 3 x 1.33 mega-pixel sensors, each capturing one primary colour spectrum (red, green, and blue) for both still and video recording.

The 3-CCD system is combined with the company's Megabrid Imaging Engine, which optimises image processing separately for still and video images.

The MG-505 is the latest model of JVC's pioneering line of hard disk drive-based camcorders, and features 30GB of built-in storage as well as an SD card expansion slot. With the built-in memory, you should be able to get more than seven hours of video at the ultra-fine setting and a whooping 371/2 hours of video at the economy setting and up to 9,999 still images.

The MG-505 also features a Direct DVD function, which allows you to connect to an external DVD writer to create DVDs without going through your computer.

Together with its compact size, the MG-505 offers a compelling solution for budding video enthusiasts.

The MG-505 is currently only available in Japan but should arrive here in July. Expect to pay between $10,000 and $12,000.

Pros: 3-CCD/5 mega-pixels, 30GB built-in storage, compact design

Cons: not high-definition TV quality, no Dolby sound
