Coach show rolls into town, for just one night

The latest promotional tool for luxury brands is to curate self-important displays of their creations, lending aesthetic and cultural cache to luxury merchandise to boost the cold-cash bottom line.

The most recent example is American accessory label Coach, which set up a photo exhibition by its creative director. Called 'Portraits by Reed Krakoff', it celebrates the label's 65 years with 65 images of style makers and socialites.

A few of its senior executives even flew all the way to Hong Kong from New York to share the glory with local brand operator Imaginex, headed by Balbina Wong.

Naturally, we were pleased to be invited to preview the works last Thursday at the Hong Kong Design Centre on Kennedy Road. They are cheerful, vibrant pictures, perfect for an ad campaign. Unfortunately, you'll never see it because the display was mounted for just one night, which seemed silly to us. I mean, how hard is it to make a few more prints? After all, they are nice pictures that clearly serve the brand well, so why not leave them up for a while so the buying public can have a gander?
