Nokia did it with its silvery, high-end models, and now both  Motorola and SonyEricsson have decided it is their turn to explore metallic finishes.

The latest version of Motorola's ultra-thin RAZR series sports a sleek, metallic gloss finish that surely makes it one of the most eye-catching phones out on the market today. The KRZR (short for crazy  RAZR?) retains the thinness of its predecessors, but trims off about a centimetre off the width.

Whether deliberately or  coincidentally, SonyEricsson has also recently launched its own mirror-finished model, the Z610, which looks a bit like  a big brother  to the KRZR. While not as thin as the KRZR, the Z610 should still turn heads with its metallic exterior.

Both models will come in shades of blue and dark grey, while the Z610 range adds a pink version to the mix.

Ssimilarities  between the two also extend to the 2 megapixel digital camera. Both have  video recording, a large colour display, and support all the standard advanced features, such as wireless data, MP3 player, and games.

One big difference is that the Z610's secondary display uses OLED - like Sony's recently launched series of Walkmans - which supports only text and icons, and not photos.

The two also have very different personalities. The KRZR oozes sophistication and fashion, while the Z610 embodies fun and high-tech chic. The choice is  yours.

The KRZR is listed at $3,280 while the Z610 sells for $2,580.

PROS: tinted metallic gloss finish, ultra slim KRZR, 3G-enabled Z610

CONS: the KRZR doesn't have 3G, the Z610 is a bit bulky
