Hear the words 'child star' and most people  think of the queen of the bunch, Dakota Fanning, her  sister Elle, or  noteworthy newbie Abigail Breslin.

But AnnaSophia Robb is beginning to nip at those heels. The 13-year-old actress, with her translucent skin, blond hair framing her heart-shaped face and poised demeanour, is making waves in Hollywood because, as well as being  childlike and pretty, she can really act. She has just been in two high-profile movies - Bridge to Terabithia and The Reaping (co-starring in the latter with Hilary Swank). She has also filmed Doubting Thomas, about a young boy who sets out to save the life of the US president, and is in post-production on Ferris Wheel, in which she worked with Charlize Theron, Nick Stahl, Dennis Hopper and Woody Harrelson, playing a 12-year-old  trying to find happiness after being abandoned by her parents.

Beyond that, she's still going to school and wanting to do teenage things  such as getting to a Black  Eyed Peas concert. Oh, and she's  also interested in saving the world.

Dressed in peach and cream, just a smidgen of makeup on her face, she personifies the girl-next-door look.  That's not too much of a stretch for her. She goes to church regularly, is part of a youth group, and loves being home with her family and friends.

'I feel very comfortable in my faith,'  AnnaSophia says. 'My church is not a big religious type of place where you have to sing boring hymns. I enjoy going there  because I have friends and  mentors I can get  advice from.'

An actress since she was nine,  AnnaSophia says she was drawn to the profession from her earliest days.

'It's kind of crazy, really,' she says. 'I just saw kids on TV, I knew I liked people and liked being in front of them. I wanted to act. I think every little girl wants to act and go to LA, but I had no idea what it would be like.'

She enlisted the help of her parents in finding a talent agent, a  Denver company run by actors. She got involved in workshops, and the  agency helped her land voiceover and commercial gigs. She enrolled in a six-week acting class, at the end of which a group of agents and managers from Los Angeles flew out to scout new talent.

'I got picked up, and two weeks later I was in LA,' she says. She landed her first Hollywood role, in the TV movie, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday. That led to other, higher-profile gigs - such as Wayne Wang's Because  of Winn-Dixie and  Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp. When she's not working, she's aligning herself with  causes such as  Darfur in Sudan and  the Dalit Freedom Network  for India's 'untouchables'.

'I can use the recognition I have to help people in the world,' she says. 'Because of the position I've been given, I should be doing good. I have  to deal with all of this with grace.'
