Keep your cool

OMA, the Dutch architectural firm headed by Rem Koolhaas, has joined forces with Porsche Design to develop a landmark waterfront project in the heart of Dubai's Business Bay. The complex (artist's impression, left), which will be completed in 2009, will comprise an 85,000 square metre office tower and a 30,000 square metre residential tower. Taking Dubai's climate into consideration, OMA has framed the office tower with side wings and an overlap to create large shadows which will shade the tower and reduce the need for air-conditioning. Meanwhile, Porsche Design will be responsible for the interiors, giving residents the option of installing the design studio's  kitchens, furniture and lighting units.

French polish

French designer Andree Putman  has brought her distinctive style to Hong Kong in the form of   the Putman, a block of 28 new serviced apartments  on Queen's Road Central. Opening this month, the block  has been built to meet  Putman's exacting specifications, from the mosaic-inspired facade to the  Andree Putman accessories that  will adorn  the flats, including her  Crescent Moon sofa (below)

and  her range of silverware for Christofle.

Home from home

Hong Kong-based lifestyle guru and interior designer Louise Kou has been appointed to create interior styling concepts for the new private residences at Bali's St Regis Resort and Residence, which is scheduled for completion next year. The luxury development,  situated on the  beachfront  in Nusa Dua area, will  leave the chic villas  unfurnished, giving owners the opportunity to commission Kou  to furnish them.  The former fashion executive will source objects of the highest quality from around the world -  just as she has done for Kou, her home emporium in Central.

Peace offering

Shanghai's historic Peace Hotel,  now closed for a  complete renovation, will reopen in 2010 as the Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai.

Built by British trader Victor Sassoon in 1929, it was  created in the gothic style of the Chicago school and features the  distinct green copper-covered pyramidal roof that  has become  such a recognisable feature on the Bund's skyline. Hirsch Bedner  Associates, the design consultancy in charge of the restoration work, will take inspiration from the hotel's  glorious past,  retaining  its old-world charm while adding modern amenities to meet the standards of  today's discerning travellers.
