Volleyball boys do HK proud

Hong Kong put on a good performance at the third boys' Asian Schools Volleyball Championship which was held in Singapore earlier this month.

They came sixth in the competition which attracted 11 teams from the region.

The SAR players gained valuable international exposure that would help them in the future, team officials said.

Hong Kong got off to a flying start, crushing the Philippines 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-19) in their first match.

'Lee Man-sing of Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School performed the best and was excellent in attack. He made several crucial spikes,' said team secretary, Karin Tam Kok-wing.

Hong Kong beat Vietnam 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 27-25) with another dominant performance at Lion City's Republic Polytechnic. But their hopes of a top-four finish ended when they were beaten in straight sets, 23-25, 21-25, 14-25, by Malaysia.

Hong Kong also lost to South Korea 0-3 (10-25, 17-25, 12-25) in their final preliminary match, but their battling display against one of the top teams in the tournament won them many fans.

'Their outstanding performance attracted quite a lot of admiration, especially from the girls,' said Tam.

Hong Kong lost to Sri Lanka 2-3 (15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 10-15) in a tight contest that decided the final placings.

Hong Kong ended up sixth after losing their first, five-set match of the competition.

Head coach Law Wing-fai was satisfied with the final result.

'This is the best result compared to the past two championships. All the players performed above their standards,' Law said. 'However, the Hong Kong team still have room for improvement.'

In order to achieve better results in the future, Law said the players had to improve

their serve, basic defensive skills and fitness.

Thailand won the championship, followed by South Korea, China and Malaysia.
