An emotionally disturbed golden retriever which  mauled its former owner's arm so badly that the  limb had to be amputated has found a new home in a private kennel under strict conditions set by government vets.

The 11-year-old dog, known as Ah Kum, was adopted yesterday by the Lasso Vom Lotus Kennel in Kam Tin after being locked up at the Sung Wong Toi Road government kennel for 34 days.

It will be looked after by kennel staff and will receive obedience training along with other dogs.

Under the adoption conditions laid down by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Ah Kum is strictly barred from having contact with people other than the kennel's trainers. It also cannot be transferred.

An AFCD spokesman said the dog remained emotionally unstable and unfit for adoption by the  public.

Kennel trainer Daniel Tang Yip-hay  said Ah Kum looked like a normal, lovely dog that enjoyed playing with people. 'Contrary to what people said about Ah Kum,  he actually looks very optimistic and is nice to people,' Mr Tang said.

He  said Ah Kum would have to be tied and muzzled while in public spaces, and visitors to the kennel would not be allowed to go near it.

The pet dog seriously injured  Wong Yuet-ngoi last month.  Immediately after the attack, Ms Wong's daughter, Leung Yuk-yee,  surrendered the dog to the government.

The department has rejected a recent request by Ms Leung to reclaim custody of the dog.
