Gang of truck hijackers arrested

Police have arrested a gang of robbers who hijacked a container truck loaded with HK$7.5 million worth of electronic goods in Tin Shui Wai.

Detectives from Yuen Long district, acting on a tip-off, arrested nine people on Wednesday and recovered stolen goods worth HK$2.8 million in raids on eight premises.

The goods were from the hijacked truck and from another theft in which HK$1.5 million worth of digital cameras were stolen, police said.

'The unrecovered goods might have been sold in the city or smuggled out of Hong Kong,' Superintendent Albert Ng Ka-wah, assistant district commander for Yuen Long, said.

He said the eight men and one woman, who were local residents, included owners of audio and video shops in Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Mr Ng warned that anyone convicted of handling stolen property faced a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail.

Police refused to say if the gang's ringleader was among those arrested. The suspects were being held in custody at Yuen Long police station last night. No one had been charged.

In February, one of two robbers lay in the middle of Ping Ha Road in Tin Shui Wai to stop a container truck loaded with HK$7.5 million of digital cameras and video cameras as it left a container yard.

'When its driver got out to check, he was assaulted and overpowered. He was tied up and then pushed into the back,' Mr Ng said.

The truck, with its bound driver, was later abandoned in Sham Shui Po but the goods were missing.
