Director-actor Jiang Wen's drama about intertwined lives during the Cultural Revolution raises  fewer questions about  tangled interpersonal relationships than it does about the nature of cinematic art versus mainstream filmmaking. Daring in its nonlinear story telling and refusal to spoon-feed  the audience with expository material,  it's a film  that demands multiple viewings, not to mention a perusal of the plot synopsis, to come into focus, even for those familiar with its  historical milieu.

The nearly two-hour-long production  comprises four chapters whose sequential order is not immediately apparent, a quality that extends to the characters and the gradually revealed interconnecting worlds  they  inhabit.

The first three episodes take place  in 1976 during the twilight of the Cultural Revolution, with  parts one and three centring on a teenage brigade leader (Jaycee Chan, far right) and his remote southern village. Part one is  mainly concerned with the boy's youthful mother (Zhou Yun),  a dynamo whose deteriorating mental state and escalating eccentricities provide the son with clues  about the father he never knew.

The second section  is set in the more  urbane environment of a university campus in eastern China. A triangular affair between a flirtatious doctor (Joan Chen), a teacher (Anthony Wong Chau-sang), and his best friend  (Jiang Wen) leads to tragedy. Tang's saga continues in  part three, when  he undergoes 're-education' in the  village and finds an unlikely rival in the naive brigade leader. The object of contention is Tang's wife (Kong Wei, right,  who delivers the film's most acute performance), a  sophisticate  mortified by the peasant existence she is  forced to endure with a husband from whom she has grown estranged.

The final  part moves the action back 18 years to 1958 and the  Gobi Desert, where most of the  main characters in parts one  to three come together in a way reminiscent of  the idea of six degrees of separation.  But by then,  viewers  may  feel so frustrated by the vague,  arbitrary  narrative   that they may  find it hard to care.

Yet it would be unfair not to recognise  the director's audacity. One of the most nuanced pictures to come out of  the mainland, it deals with  political and sexual subtexts in a  subtle manner. Jiang's  directorial skills are evident throughout, with many sequences brilliantly staged. Standouts include part two's open-air movie screening, which takes  a Cinema Paradiso-style  set-up a few steps further; and the  confluence of themes and characters against  the backdrop of the shifting Xinjiang sands in part four.

It's a work tailor-made for analysis, and there will doubtless be more than one cinema studies thesis written on it.  The Sun Also Rises is an achievement on an intellectual level and  Jiang Wen's insistence on doing things his way is to be admired. But on a purely movie-going level, it fails  to  engage.
