Jungle Bells

Sat, 10pm, Yellow Devil

At first listen, the low-frequency, frenetic sounds of drum'n'bass may seem out of tune with the Christmas season, a time of year associated more with Bing Crosby and carols. But for the second year running, Undine Bischoff, of event organiser Kongkrete Bass, is tackling the general perception of drum'n'bass as a hard-edged genre by giving something back.

'The event is totally run out of our own pockets, with all invited artists and participants kindly offering their skills pro bono,' says Bischoff.

With profits to be donated to an as-yet unnamed charity, Jungle Bells will feature some of the nascent scene's finest local representatives.

'This music genre is quite versatile and spans a wide spectrum of styles, from soulful all the way through to heavier sounds,' says Bischoff.

The lineup is a diverse one, with names from Blood Dunza showcasing the heavier, darker side of the genre, to DJ Wash (pictured), who spins tracks from the more accessible end of the drum'n'bass scale, such as jump-up and liquid funk.

Bischoff will also be taking to the decks under the name Electronic Mistress, as will junglist Arkham, familiar to regulars at Yumla for his bass-heavy sounds.

'The different crews who promote drum'n'bass in Hong Kong always try to describe [the range of styles] to audiences. Hong Kong has seen an effort to revive the genre with a number of international artists and local DJ/producers sharing the turntables in the past couple of years,' Bischoff says.

Bischoff hopes the event has a bright future. 'We want to establish Jungle Bells as the annual highlight of the local drum'n'bass scene. We're hoping to welcome new talent and perhaps receive more support from sponsors and local venues.'
