Djedjotronic

Volar, tonight, 10pm

Hong Kong, in case you haven't noticed, is slowly becoming more francophilic. From music to cuisine and the number of trendy young Gallic expats scratching out a living, it seems the city has entered into an entente cordiale with all things French.

You can now add music to this ever-growing list, as ultra-hip Parisian label Ed Banger is again on its way east to rock with Djedjotronic, one of the latest additions to its acclaimed roster of artists, which also includes dance-rock act Justice and the photogenic Uffie.

The label is certainly going places. An offshoot of Headbanger Entertainment, it was formed in 2002 and gained notoriety outside of France after label mainstays Justice remixed - to great critical success - Simian's track Never Be Alone. The song went on to reach No20 in the British charts and was a huge club hit, providing the push the label had been waiting for.

It propelled the featured artists into the big-time, garnering generally favourable reaction from the British press for the label as a whole. Ed Banger's sound is characterised by a certain amount of craziness - although the Simian remix that launched the label into prominence is now dismissed as 'too clean' by Justice's Xavier de Rosnay - and Djedjotronic carries this on this tradition. An eclectic use of synths and sampling brings together surprises, but never loses sight of the music as primarily a vehicle to get clubbers on the dance floor.

Ed Banger label manager Pedro Winter has managed acclaimed French act Daft Punk for the past 11 years, but is at pains to distance Ed Banger acts from the groundbreaking duo's work. 'It's just our common musical culture. Daft Punk were into rock, rap and electro and Justice are the same.'

Winter acknowledges his label's avant-garde leanings, but dismisses the critical elements of the press. 'I don't think there's a noise competition,' he told the Guardian last year. 'But, definitely, it's something we play with. We're making distortion musical. We're making noise funky.'
