Hillside feast

Han Lok Yuen

16-17 Hung Shing Yeh, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, 29820608

Fare Chinese.

Ambience Nestled on the hillside of Hung Shing Yeh Beach, the restaurant is a good 20-minute walk, but the journey is worth it. The decor is basic and family-oriented, with toys and bicycles keeping the little ones occupied while parents feast away. The view of endless ocean on a clear day makes a sunset meal unforgettable. There is an indoor seating area with air-conditioning. The atmosphere is laid-back with beachgoers and day trippers, some still dressed in swimming gear, lounging lazily awaiting their feast. A lovely place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Cost Pigeon (HK$65) must be booked ahead. Seafood prices fluctuate according to season. Other famous dishes include deep-fried garlic squid (HK$68) and minced quail with lettuce (HK$88).

Who to bring Out-of-town guests who want an out-of-town dining experience with the added value of having to trawl through one of Hong Kong's oldest fishing villages to get there. It is also a great place to take the family where kids are truly welcome.

Turn-Ons Pigeon eating is taken to a new level thanks to its succulent and juicy meat. Unlike other pigeon restaurants in Hong Kong where you get more bones than meat, here you certainly get bang for your buck with pigeons of a healthy size. Though the meat can be a bit dry, the quail is a nice treat to offset the meatiness of the meal. You have to wrap the minced quail, vegetables and sauce in lettuce yourself.

Turn-Offs Having to order the number of pigeons a party will eat before getting to the restaurant spoils the spontaneity of the day. This is not the place for seafood. The prawns were overcooked, chewy and lacking in flavour. Side dishes such as the ribs in garlic sauce were also disappointing as the meat was tough and the dishes were too salty.

Drinks Beer and soft drinks.
