Get organised and anticipate

Holidays are around the corner. This year, you are going on a language exchange, and you will spend two weeks abroad. You are getting ready, but have you thought of drawing up a budget?

Whatever plans you have for this summer, it is always a good idea to budget them. First, write a list of all that you need to do before your trip. Then write a list of what you would like to do during your holiday. Why not use a computer to update your lists more easily? Beside each item on your list, jot down how much it might cost.

Then classify the expenses: travel, accommodation, food, outings, visits, gifts, visa ... and add up.

If you are going abroad, check the exchange rates. However, the cost of living might be different from Hong Kong. Food, hotels and taxis might cost more or less than Hong Kong prices in foreign currency. To get an idea of the cost of living abroad, you can check websites for tourists or even local online supermarkets.

Once you have a clear idea of the cost of your trip, prioritise your expenses and see if you can get better deals.

The budget will also help you anticipate how much foreign currency you should take with you.
