Top honour for university founder

Educator Henry Hu Hung-lick, who, with his wife Chung Chi-yung, founded Shue Yan University, Hong Kong's first private university, has been awarded the city's top honour - the Grand Bauhinia Medal.

Dr Hu, 88, is to be recognised for his lifelong dedication and contribution to higher education. Since 1971 the couple have made substantial financial and personal efforts to support the institution, leading to it becoming a university in 2006.

A barrister and former legislator, Dr Hu is one of four recipients of the Grand Bauhinia Medal, the other three being Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang, 60; property tycoon and chairman of New World Development Cheng Yu-tung, 83; and industrialist and chairman of YGM Group Chan Sui-kau, 84.

Dr Hu said being awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal was his greatest achievement. 'I feel very happy, of course, that what I have done for the community has been noticed by the community. It is a great encouragement to me. I hope I can do more for the community and for the general good of my country,' he said.

Mr Justice Li, who has served as chief justice since the handover, is being recognised for his 'crucial role in upholding the rule of law... and in safeguarding the independence of the judiciary'.

Mr Chan is being recognised for his contribution to the development of the textile and clothing industry in Hong Kong. He is also active in charity activities.

Mr Cheng, also chairman of New World Hotels and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, is recognised for his contribution to the 'development and innovation of the jewellery manufacturing industry'.

A presentation ceremony has been scheduled for October.
