Hiloco

Oct 31, 11pm, Avenue

Halloween in Hong Kong - essentially another reason for you to costume up as sexy as possible and rustle up as many terror-ridden turns of phrase as you can think of. Local events crew Lotion is throwing a 'fright night' featuring Japanese DJ Hiloco, who aside from having a set of completely non-scary press photos also throws down some mean house and minimal techno.

Of course, the 'female DJ' thing isn't really a thing any more, but it's worth mentioning that Hiloco (right) is, in fact, a female DJ, since she also happens to be part of a number of all-female ventures. For example, she's a 'FamGirl' with FamFatal, a collective of female DJs, VJs and 'gogo girls' who throw regular house nights in Tokyo, Osaka and beyond. Then there's her residency under her more house-centric alterego neroDoll at the Osaka all-woman party House Nation.

Like much of Asia, dance music in Japan has emerged from the underground to become a fairly mainstream and lucrative pursuit, and the big cities have very healthy club scenes. In particular, there seems to be no shortage of talented and prolific female DJs in Japan, and Osaka-born Hiloco is one of the scene's rising stars, resident at one of Osaka's best nights, the tech-house party Krauss that has seen headliners to the tune of Berlin techno legend Jeremy P. Caulfield.

Hiloco got her start in 2006, when she says listening to psychedelic trance and techno turned her onto the clubbing scene. Don't expect anything too wooshy and FX-ridden, though - she admits her stuff these days runs more along the lines of 'click, deep and minimal music'.

Influence-wise, she cites names as diverse as British electro-house duo Italoboyz, electro-jazz outfit Cinematic Orchestra and electro/techno icon DJ Hell, but her sound is properly dance floor-friendly stuff. Hong Kong will get a taste of what Lotion calls 'Japan as you've never experienced before', when Hiloco graces the decks at Lan Kwai Fong nightspot Avenue next week - you may even get some faux cobwebs with your house music.
