Make it a fast getaway

The prospect of hanging out with all those weird and annoying relatives so soon after the lame office party is not always compelling. 'Hell is other people,' as the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre puts it, and he probably penned these words during the festive season. Anyway, last year you stuck around over Christmas and regretted it, but this time round you have just enough time to plan an escape, right? Carl Sutherland suggests some terrific Christmas destinations, all only a few hours of flying time away - but every one a great distance from your extended family, irksome colleagues, thoughts of work and glittery seasonal overkill

Back to basics

If you seek the real Bangkok without tacked-on western glamour, there is a five-day, four-night package priced at HK$3,190, provided you depart on December 22 or 25. This is a great opportunity to do some shopping or sightseeing and general drifting around in a fascinating metropolis with nothing more than a guidebook in your hand and a little curiosity. Five days is just long enough to take in a trip to Pattaya (still gratuitously seedy despite efforts to gentrify this sin city) or the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, 80 kilometres north of Bangkok.
