Mao Zedong proclaims the founding of the People's Republic of China in Beijing after 22 years of civil war. The defeated government of the Republic of China - the Kuomintang (KMT) led by Chiang Kai-shek - retreats from Nanking (now known as Nanjing or 'southern capital'; Beijing means 'northern capital') to Taipei.
