How do you ensure that staff remain healthy?

UBS provides comprehensive medical insurance plans, bi-annual medical check-ups, flu immunisations and access to an employee assistance programme, as well as a continuous programme of health and well-being talks. The financial crisis brought many challenges, not least increased levels of stress felt by employees and the subsequent affects of that. To alleviate this stress and help employees better understand how to manage it, the company organised a wellness fair. Vendors set up stalls in our offices and provided employees with guidance and information. There were free fitness assessments, on-the-spot allergy and stress tests and consultations on overall health and wellness. There were also demonstrations of stretching exercises and short massage sessions.

To promote health and a healthy lifestyle for employees, we provide annual flu vaccinations and medical checks. We offer reasonable medical coverage and help encourage staff to seek doctor's advice when necessary. We assess the ergonomics of staff working conditions and give advice. As well as staff gatherings, we provide sponsorship for activities arranged by staff themselves, such as hiking, boat trips and bike tours to China. To help staff achieve good work-life balance, early this year we reduced the work hours of our frontline technicians. We encourage management to lead by example by not working unreasonably long hours, as well as encouraging staff to use all their leave entitlements and refraining from calling them when they are on holiday.
