Golden Phoenix Restaurant

Golden Phoenix Restaurant Shop A, G/F, 415-421 Jaffe Road Wan Chai 2891 6832 Also in Lai Chi Kok Road, Prince Edward

Grub: An old, fairly famous local steak house which used to be a popular venue to take a date.

Vibe: The interior looks like a big, Western-style house, with white walls and a very high ceiling. There are not many decorations except for old photos on the wall. The furniture is old yet the few sofa seats are comfortable.

Who to bring: Anyone who's into 'Old Hong Kong' style and doesn't mind the old furniture, or overseas visitors who want to see true Hong Kong heritage and get a decent meal at the same time.

What's hot: Although the steaks on offer are not of the highest possible quality, they're great for the bargain price you pay. If you don't mind baking soda being use to soften the meat, the rib eye is a good choice: the meat is juicy and soft, and for HK$2 you can add minced garlic which really enhances the flavour.

There is a huge variety of set meals, featuring everything from beef, chicken and pork, to seafood, such as oysters and shrimp.

If you have a big appetite, try the assorted meats set. The massive serving includes steak, pork, ham and sausages, perfect for any carnivore.

Every set meal comes with soup, bread and a drink. The Borscht they serve is simply unmissable - one of the best in the city.

What's not: There's not much difference between rib-eye and sirloin, or medium rare and well done, so don't expect a miracle from the steaks. This is a place for fast, not fine, dining.

The Prince Edward branch is always busy, and queues outside start as early as 6pm, so if you want to try this institution, it's almost essential to go to the Wan Chai branch.

Also, the drinks included in the set meals are small. You can get a larger helping, but you have to add HK$5 per drink.

Cost: A very reasonable HK$40 for lunch and HK$70 for dinner.
