Grocer killed by his car after truck moves

An elderly grocer was killed after being hit by his own car in Pok Fu Lam yesterday, when a parked truck rolled 10 metres backwards into it.

Tsui Yuk-chau, 76, was standing behind his parked car on Sandy Bay Road, outside his grocery store, when the incident happened at 10.18am.

The truck had been parked 10 metres in front of Tsui's car, police said. The driver, aged 24 and surnamed Lee, was delivering goods when the truck began rolling backwards.

'The car was pushed by the truck onto a footpath for about 10 metres and it came to a stop when it hit a wall,' a police officer said. Tsui was found unconscious on the road with head injuries and was taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was declared dead at 2.34pm, police said.

The vehicles were taken to a government facility in Quarry Bay. Hong Kong traffic unit officers are investigating. Anyone with information can contact police on 3106 8800 or 3106 8838. No one was arrested.

Separately, a truck hit and killed an 86-year-old woman outside Tsui Yue House, in Tsing Ping North Estate, Kwun Tong, at 6.20pm on Wednesday. The truck driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death. He has been released on bail.

Police said 136 people died in 122 traffic accidents last year, down from 162 killed in 143 accidents in 2008.

Meanwhile, Wendy Lee Wing-chi, a 23-year-old TVB actress, escaped serious injury after jumping from a moving taxi when its brakes failed in Ho Man Tin yesterday. Superintendent Lai Yuk-wah said the driver, who remained in the taxi, was also unhurt.
