Adagio

Adagio 1/F 68 Wing Lok Street Sheung Wan Hong Kong Tel. 3528 7553

Grub: European fusion. There are a number of pasta dishes, salads, some good snacks and fried rices.

Vibe: It's a small place with seating for about 25-30. Decor is simple but modern with Canto-pop playing in the background, though not too loud. The best tables are the ones for two that overlook Wing Lok Street. Adagio is a popular lunch spot for office workers in the area, so go before 12.30pm or after 2pm.

Who to bring: A small group of friends after school.

What's hot: One of the great things about Adagio is that a lot of the dishes are small and inexpensive. This allows you to try a lot of different things without breaking the bank or overeating. The six-inch mini pizzas are a great example. At that size, they're not much bigger than a big biscuit. A crispy base completes the illusion. The salmon and olive one is especially good.

Other small dishes include roasted tiger prawn and beef tenderloin; baked mussels with garlic, cheese and butter; and mixed mushrooms with butter and cream sauce. All of which sound quite delicious. The cheese sauce on the baked broccoli with bacon was blisteringly hot - you'll need to let it cool a while. The sauce is a little bland but you can easily liven it up with the parmesan cheese that comes with the pizza.

If you are up for something bigger, the tiger prawn and scallops in cheese and basil sauce, and the pork chop and boneless chicken in onion sauce both look interesting.

Most of the pasta dishes contain seafood, though there is one with beef tenderloin, and a good vegetarian option with at least three types of mushroom and lovely crisp carrots, green beans, broccoli and courgettes.

There are half a dozen fried rice selections to choose from. The Mexican-style with roast beef tenderloin and tomatoes was tempting as was the tiger prawn, pineapple and bacon.

There are only three desserts: cheesecake, apple crumble, and chocolate pudding. The latter comes with ice cream and is quite yummy.

What's not: The choice of drinks is limited. Other than the usual canned drinks there is only tea and coffee. It would be nice to have juices or smoothies.

Cost: Snacks range from just HK$15 to HK$58. Pastas, pizzas, rices and main courses cost from HK$28 to HK$139. Desserts are HK$30-HK$34.
