Strong mainland growth

What are your development plans for China?

Hermes is growing strongly in China and so is the watch business. La Montre is working on opening new doors with our shop-in-shop concept. These look the same as our boutiques, but carry only watches or watches and jewellery. We currently have six shop-in-shop stores in China - in Beijing, Kunming and Anshan. A seventh store, selling watches and jewellery, will open in Shanghai in January. We are also looking at opening more boutiques in China, adding to the existing 17, and will continue developing our business in the coming years.

Which of your watches are the most popular on the mainland and why?

Mainlanders are connoisseurs, showing a high interest in watches of high quality with mechanical movements, as well as in unique watches demonstrating a specific craftsmanship, such as enamel, mother-of-pearl engraving. They are very sensitive to high-quality products with a high level of craftsmanship. The Arceau is becoming a leading collection with its pure, round and simple lines expressing the Hermes DNA - horses.

Do you see a resurgence in Europe's watchmaking industry?

Yes, there is a strong recovery this year, especially for brands with strong presence in Asia and Greater China.

What is the biggest challenge for luxury watch brands today?

Protecting the integrity of the brand equity and keeping a long-term vision, while resisting short-term commercial temptations.
