Dukes Deli

Dukes Deli Shop 301, 3/F, iSquare 63 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Tel. 3583 4696

Grub: American-style deli serving hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, salads, ribs and a few pasta dishes.

Vibe: The restaurant's name is lit up in bright lights, rather like a Broadway show, except in iSquare they don't merge with the lights of all the other shows and the traffic: they yell at you from across the mall, 'Hey, come and get a taste of New York!' It's hard to resist.

The restaurant has two sections. The outer area is for takeaway orders and people stopping by for a quick sandwich and a coffee. Beyond this is a larger dining area with more big light bulbs, quilted leatherette seats and booths, and a gallery of vintage photos, advertising and other images dating back as far as the 1930s.

Who to bring: Classmates on the last day of term. Prices are reasonable and portions are big, so, together, you could set up quite a spread and still have cash left for Christmas prezzies.

What's hot: Before you become absorbed in the menu, it is worth remembering that this is a New-York-style establishment and you can expect New-York-sized portions. Be prepared share.

There are a number of starters on the menu. Ever-popular nachos and chicken wings - available in mild, medium or spicy coating - make an appearance, but don't overlook the mozzarella sticks. The onion rings, coated in breadcrumbs and fried in a light oil, are also very good.

The pizza slices are huge. A single slice is too big for the average plate, and since the pizza is made with thick crust, it's super filling and a slice can easily be shared between two or even three people.

If you are just stopping by for a sandwich, there are nine types of bread and 18 fillings to choose from, including avocado and eggplant options for vegetarians. If you are a meat eater, the Philly cheese steak might be too appetising to resist. Made with thinly sliced beef, fried onions and green peppers and topped with Cheese whizz, it's a taste explosion in your mouth.

Desserts change every day. If, miraculously, you're not full after your main course, there is a good selection of sweet stuff on display by the entrance. It usually includes cheesecakes, pumpkin pie and pastries. There is also a variety of coffee if you're a java junkie or need to delay the food coma.

What's not: You will eat too much - almost guaranteed. Condiments were not on the table nor were they offered. I had to ask.
