Burger Room

Burger Room 7 Caroline Hill Road Causeway Bay Tel: 2890 9130

Grub: Many different types of burger.

Vibe: A small, funky place in an out-of-the-way corner of Causeway Bay. Despite its location, it can get very busy at times, and with seating for only about 20 there is often a bit of a wait. But the staff are friendly and helpful and do the their best to keep everything moving.

Who to bring: Friends with a sense of adventure - beef isn't the only things you can put between buns.

What's hot: What sets the Burger Room apart from most other burger joints is the selection of burgers not made with beef. The mushroom smoked duck breast and the bacon chicken burgers both catch the eye.

If those don't tempt you, there is the burgers made from sole - with or without egg - black cod and ling fish. The chilli ling fish burger is particularly recommended, but it is very spicy so be warned. There are also soft-shelled crab, scallop or even lobster burgers if your pockets are deep enough.

If you are intent on having something vaguely traditional, the Portobello Cheeseburger or Fois Gras burger both stand out. But with so many other interesting options, it seems a shame to settle for boring beef. If you're vegetarian you can have the Portobello mushroom as a burger in its own right.

The Club is the biggest burger on the menu. It contains two beef patties, tomato, lettuce, bacon, mushroom, cheddar cheese, a fried egg and pickles. It's also a triumph of architecture - at least until the homemade sauce finds its way into the bread and the whole thing collapses like a sandcastle in a tsunami.

There are a load of extra toppings available for HK$8, including egg, cheese, bacon and mushroom, so you can really personalise your meal.

If the burgers don't fill you up, or you just need a snack, there is a small selection of side dishes on the menu. They are mostly variations on fries, such as potato wedges or twister fries, all of which are available with or without melted cheese. They also offer chicken wings and nuggets, and mozzarella sticks. There is also a wide range of coffees, teas and soft drinks on offer.

What's not: The burgers are served in a basket lined with paper. While this may be an attractive presentation option, it does make it hard to pick up your meal. Since some of the fillings are almost guaranteed to collapse at first bite, cutlery would be very welcome. And a major blow for the sweet-toothed: there are no desserts available.

Cost: A basic burger is HK$50; prices go up to HK$188 for the lobster option.
